Now that Spring has come around, it’s the perfect time to enjoy relaxed drives around the Dales, taking in the stunning scenery as you go. We’ve put together a guide to one of our favourite routes, starting at The Punch Bowl Inn for lunch, and finishing at The Charles Bathurst Inn for a coffee and a slice of homemade cake. Be sure to allow for a couple of hours on the road, and a little more if you plan to make stops to explore and take photos.
Enjoy Lunch at The Punch Bowl Inn
Begin your afternoon with a leisurely lunch at The Punch Bowl Inn, enjoying views of rolling hills and the picturesque village of Low Row. Whether you choose a hearty dish or a light bite, it’s the ideal spot to fuel up (yourself, not the car!) before heading out into the Dales.
Begin your scenic drive, heading towards Buttertubs Pass
From The Punch Bowl Inn, drive west through Gunnerside, then Muker, following the road up towards Buttertubs Pass. This is one of the most scenic and striking roads in the Dales, with dramatic views over the moorland and limestone scenery.
Buttertubs Pass itself is a highlight - a high, winding road that’s thrilling to drive and superb for photos. Be sure to stop off here to stretch your legs, take in the views, and read the information board to find out how this beautiful area originally got it’s name.
Descend into Wensleydale and head toward Redmire
Drop down toward Hawes and then take minor roads (likely via the A684 and local lanes) toward Bainbridge, Caperby, Askrigg and Redmire village; a picturesque settlement on the edge of Wensleydale with views over the surrounding countryside.
Take the roads toward Arkengarthdale (The CB Inn)
From Redmire, continue north and then west toward Arkengarthdale via Grinton Moor and Reeth. This route will take you back through quieter dale roads to where The CB Inn lies in its scenic valley setting.
Here the pace slows, the valleys deepen, and you’re surrounded by grass‑topped hills and traditional stone farm buildings - very much classic Dales countryside.
Finish with a coffee at The Charles Bathurst Inn
The perfect end to a perfect day; treat yourself to a warming brew at The CB Inn before heading home.
